Steamfitters Local 601 Apprenticeship - Construction
Steamfitters build and maintain the infrastructure of cities, residential and industrial facilities. We call ourselves the Keepers of the Craft because these specialized skills and traditions are taught and sourced only at UA Local 601 in Milwaukee and Madison.
Construction Steamfitters utilize technology & welding to design, layout, fabricate, and install the piping, components, and equipment to build & maintain process piping systems. We do work in natural gas, fuel oil, water, heating & cooling, refrigeration, steam, chemical, hydraulic, food & beverage - and more! The apprenticeship program is 5-year time-based training program where an apprentice earns while they learn. You can apply to our program online through the Applicant Portal via our website. The application process includes the following steps:

Click the ‘Apply Online Now’ button below to launch the Applicant Portal. - Watch the Trade Orientation video.
This 16-minute video is designed to familiarize you with the Steamfitting industry, how our apprenticeship program works, and how to apply. Please pay close attention because there is a quiz! - Complete & Pass the Comprehension Quiz.
This 22-question quiz will test your comprehension of the Trade Orientation video. You can go back to the video for reference. You must pass the quiz to access the Application Form. - Complete the Online Application.
Provide the required information. Applications can be saved in-progress and completed later. You’ll be required to upload proof of high school graduation (i.e. high school transcripts, GED/HSED Certificate or Award Letter. NO DIPLOMAS.) - Submit Application to Steamfitters 601 for Review.
Steamfitters 601 will review your application and documents. Your application will either be accepted or returned to you for corrections/updates. If accepted, Steamfitters 601 will contact you via email to provide your Authorization to Test letter and instructions on scheduling your aptitude tests. - Complete & Pass Aptitude Tests.
Applicants are required to take (and pass) the following aptitude tests: Accuplacer Arithmetic, Accuplacer Algebra (QRAS), Accuplacer Reading, and the GAN Aptitude. We partner with WRTP/Big Step for all testing needs, and they will assist you to schedule a testing appointment and to prepare for the tests (study guides, practice tests, etc.). - Attend a Group Interview with the JAC.
After Steamfitters 601 receives your passing test scores, they will schedule you to attend a Group Interview with the Joint Apprenticeship Committee (JAC). The JAC will issue you with a Letter of Introduction and a list of contractors that you can apply to for sponsorship into the program. Contractors cannot hire a person to do steamfitting work unless they have a valid Letter of Introduction. Please note that, while receiving a Letter of Introduction is
part of the process, it does not guarantee an apprenticeship or a job in the steamfitting industry.
Requirements
All applicants must:
- Be at least 17 years of age
- Provide proof of graduation (high school transcript with valid graduation date, GED certificate, HSED certificate, or equivalent)
- Hold a valid driver's license
- Be able to pass a drug screening
- Be legally authorized to work in the US
